Soweto Edutainment Tour Itinerary

Tour Starts

  • Meet your experienced, friendly and qualified Soweto tourist guide.
  • First stop is at the Soccer City Stadium for photos before entering Soweto.
  • We then enter Soweto via Diepkloof Extension, the upmarket jewel of Soweto.
  • Drive past the biggest hospital in the southern hemisphere – Baragwanath Hospital.
  • Continue past Orlando Towers, an iconic landmark of Soweto.
  • We proceed to the informal settlement in Kliptown for a guided tour of the squatter camp. The tour will be led by a local area specialist who will introduce you to the harsh realities of the poor community as well as the diversity of Soweto (we can skip this stop for locals).
  • The tour then continues to Orlando West and enters the world famous Vilakazi Street where two Nobel Peace Prize winners lived, namely Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
  • We stop at Mandela House Museum for a full guided tour of the family home. The house is revamped and filled with interesting artefacts and memorabilia pertaining to the South African liberation icons, namely Nelson Mandela and Winnie Mandela.
  • From the Mandela House Museum, we proceed to the site where Hector Pieterson was shot and killed by the police during the 1976 students uprising.
  • The trip then continues to Hector Pieterson Museum. This is the site where the whole story about the 1976 students uprising is told. The museum is fascinating and has a state-of-the-art multimedia centre depicting scenes leading to the students uprising which changed the political landscape of South African history.
  • We make our last stop at Sakhumzi Restaurant in Vilakazi Street to enjoy a full African cuisine buffet with dessert.
  • Our second option for the lunch stop is Chaf Pozi Restaurant at Orlando Towers for braai/barbeque/chisa nyama.
  • The group will then return back having experienced the Soweto township life in its many forms.
